On 17 February, a briefing was held for 27 employees of FSBI “Zapovednoe Podlemorye”, during which the participants discussed the main provisions of the project “Save the Bear” and the specifics of using waste accumulation sites protected from bears and other wild animals.
As a reminder, as part of the project, the Foundation has already produced two special waste accumulation sites that are odour-proof and, thanks to a special robust design, restrict access of animals to rubbish – only humans can open the containers. The sites, consisting of a protected container and three rubbish cans, have already been delivered to the Zabaikalsky National Park and will be installed before the start of the tourist season at the campsites of Miagkaya Karga and Monakhovo, where bears have been spotted most often.
Alexander Filimonov, Senior Researcher of the FSBI “Zapovednoe Podlemorye” and the project coordinator from the PA side, informed his colleagues about the rules of use of these sites, as well as the importance of educational work with tourists. The briefing was a good opportunity for protected area staff to ask questions and discuss possible situations they might encounter during their work. At the end of the event, the Foundation invited the participants to take a survey to help assess the effectiveness of the “Save the Bear” project and adapt the activities planned for 2025 to the real needs of the area. We hope that the knowledge gained will be of particular help to the staff of FSBI “Zapovednoe Podlemorye” during the new tourist season.
