The Lake Baikal Foundation for Environmental Applications and Research is a non-profit organization established to promote natural science, humanitarian projects and initiatives being implemented by protected areas, state, public and scientific institutions and\u00a0that are aimed at preserving and developing the Baikal natural territory and Lake Baikal. The Foundation also works on the harmonization of information space around the Baikal natural territory and Lake Baikal and strives for close cooperation with experts in each area of its activities.<\/p>\n

Principles of grant support for projects<\/h3>\n

The Foundation supports research projects that seek to study and overcome environmental problems of the lake and to reveal its scientific and social innovation potential.<\/p>\n

The Foundation makes a decision on grant support for a project if the project meets one or more principles:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Necessity<\/strong>. The Foundation supports projects and initiatives that are valuable for the preservation and sustainable development of the Baikal Natural Territory and Lake Baikal, but which cannot receive enough funds from other sources. The implementation of such projects would have been impossible without the financial contribution of the Foundation. An example of such a project is\u00a0the environmental monitoring program on Lake Baikal \u00abPoint No1\u00bb<\/span><\/a>, which does not cease its activities and provides regular data on the state of the lake thanks to the systematic grant support of the Foundation;<\/li>\n
  2. Modality<\/strong>. The project should be a model solution for environmental problems and for the revealing\u00a0of the scientific and social potential of natural objects in the region, which could be replicated and adapted within the Baikal Natural Territory and beyond it taking into account local features. \u00abTrash Free National Parks\u00bb<\/a>\u00a0is an example of a project whose system solutions made it possible to replicate the experience to other natural territories, turning the project into a comprehensive program to reduce littering in the Baikal Natural territory;<\/li>\n
  3. Focus on the development of local communities.<\/strong> The project activities should be carried out taking into account the interests and needs of the local communities and should also be aimed at spreading reliable environmental knowledge among the residents of the region. The locals should understand and share the principles of sustainable development, have sufficient information about the endemics of the region, such as the Baikal seal, about the principles of sustainable waste management and the rules of careful water management. The Baikal Nature Reserve School<\/a> is an example of an ecological and educational project implemented in accordance with the needs of local residents, including socially vulnerable categories of people, and aimed at forming an ecological culture.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    All projects are consistent with the\u00a0UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and are focused on achieving five of them: SDG 4 \u00abQuality education\u00bb, SDG 6 \u00abClean water and sanitation\u00bb, SDG 12 \u00abResponsible consumption and production\u00bb, SDG 15 \u00abLife on land\u00bb and SDG 17 \u00abPartnership for the Goals\u00bb.     Expertise<\/h3>\n

    The Foundation is a member of the section \u00abProtection of water objects\u00bb of the Scientific and Technical Council (NTS) of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor), as well as a member of the Basin Council of the Angara-Baikal Basin District. Lake Baikal Foundation is granted Accreditation as an observer to the United Nations Environment Assembly of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and \u00a0is the first and only Russian member of the World Water Council.<\/p>\n

    Financing<\/h3>\n

    The Foundation is financed by donations from private donors, corporate partners and population.\u00a0In addition, the Foundation participates in competitions for non-profit organizations held by both public and private organizations.\u00a0The Foundation is four time winner of the contest of Presidential Grants Foundation.<\/p>\n
