To make the waste management system sustainable we initiated the <a href=\"https:\/\/baikalfoundation.ru\/en\/our-work\/sustainable-tourism\/trash-free-national-parks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trash Free National Parks<\/a> program. The pilot was launched in the Zabaikalsky National Park which is a part of the extensive protected natural area \u00abZapovednoye Podlemorye\u00bb located in the Republic of Buryatia. It is here where first recycling points were installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We started with a scientific research which helped us to answer the question: \u00abIs the garbage generated in the national park irrecyclable trash?\u00bb. The results showed that nearly half (42%) the garbage is valuable secondary materials which should be collected separately and recycled. The most popular type of \u00abtourist garbage\u00bb is glass bottles followed by plastic, tins and cans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effort and resources contributed to elimination of left garbage on the Baikal shore have not come unnoticed: on the natural area of 269 thousand hectares we implemented comprehensive separate garbage collection and education program for visitors. Over two years, 3 tons of recyclables have been transported to the recycling plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this system to keep working, in hot summer season the national park can maintain only with the help of volunteers which need shelter, nutrition and uniform.
