The discussion was dedicated to World Water Day
In her presentation, the Director of the Lake Baikal Foundation discussed the outcomes of the 28th UN Climate Change Conference in the context of the importance of water for climate change adaptation and the actions that states have committed to taking to preserve water resources.
Tsvetkova noted that the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change recognizes the critical role of protecting, conserving, and restoring water ecosystems. The document sets the following goals:
- Significant reduction in water resource deficits caused by climate change;
- Ensuring stable water supply and access to drinking water for all;
- Reducing the impact of climate change on ecosystems and biodiversity and accelerating the use of ecosystem-based adaptation through the protection of terrestrial, inland water, mountain, marine, and coastal ecosystems.
Notably, on the sidelines of COP 28, the UAE and ministers from 25 countries initiated the first-ever ministerial dialogue aimed at creating water-resistant food systems. Additionally, the UAE and Brazil announced a two-year strategic partnership focused on integrating resources and actions for the protection of nature and the climate. The Russian delegation, represented by Rosvodresursy, organized a “Water Day,” during which the Baikal Lake Foundation presented its practices for the protection of the world’s deepest lake.
Anastasia also discussed financing initiatives for developing climate-resilient water infrastructure and addressing water scarcity issues in countries where it is particularly acute.
The discussion also involved representatives from the UN Information Centre in Moscow, the World Health Organization (WHO) office in the Russian Federation, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) liaison office for the Russian Federation, MGIMO-University, and the Non-Governmental Environmental Fund named after V.I. Vernadsky.
