On July 22, a trilateral agreement on long-term cooperation between the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAS), Lake Baikal Foundation and Irkutsk Regional Environmental Public Organization «Glubina Otvetstvennosti» (IREOO «Depth of Responsibility») within «The Baikal Without Fishnets» project was signed.
The IO RAS is responsible for the scientific aspect of the project, in particular, for the correct collection of water and biological samples from the places of accumulation of fishnets for future analysis of hydrobiological parameters directly on board of the ship and in the specialized laboratories. On behalf of the institute, two employees work on board – Philip Sapozhnikov, PhD in Biological Sciences, hydrobiologist, senior researcher of the IO RAS, and Olga Kalinina, hydrobiologist, leading engineer of the IO RAS.
The organizers of the expedition emphasize that it is too early to talk about the results of the analysis. Researchers need time to study and explain their findings. We look forward to hearing from our colleagues.
