The Lake Baikal Foundation for Environmental Applications and Research and the Irkutsk State University signed an agreement according to which, in 2019 Lake Baikal Foundation will allocate a grant in the amount of 1.5 million rubles to support the long-term environmental monitoring program on Lake Baikal «Point No1». The first tranche, 500 000 rubles, has already been transferred. The project is carried out by scientists of the Biology Institute at ISU.
«Point No1». is a unique project in terms of duration and value of the data received, which has been continuously conducted for 70 years. Regular sampling of phytoplankton and zooplankton takes place every two weeks and is conducted continuously since February 1945 at the «pelagic stationary station No1».
Such scientific research is necessary to monitor the state of Lake Baikal, since the water quality in such a large lake is by 90% determined,
same as in the ocean, by the state of its plankton community. Given the fact that quantitative and qualitative characteristics of plankton change all the time, it is necessary to provide regular monitoring and sampling. Only these decades long observations make it possible to identify fundamental trends in the Lake Baikal ecosystem.
According to the results of the project implementation in 2016 and 2017, the findings were included in the international climate report «State of the Climate 2016» and «State of the Climate 2017». In 2019 monitoring of plankton will be continued to confirm the emerging trends. Data and samples collected in the year 2018 will be processed in the second half of the year 2019.
