In 2019, Lake Baikal Foundation, together with the joint Directorate of the Barguzin reserve and the Zabaikalsky national park «Zapovednoye Podlemorye», launched a pilot project «Trash Free National Parks» with the support of the Presidential Grants Foundation.
During the 2019 tourist season, from June to September, there were 5 separate waste collection points in the national park, with volunteers working with visitors. Together with the administration of Zabaikalsky national park, we have done detailed work on the analysis of the progress and results of the pilot project in the past year and have already outlined the main directions of the project for 2020, including the continuation of the study of municipal solid waste to create a concept of sustainable waste management for the park, updating the infrastructure for separate collection, etc.
In winter and spring, until the summer of 2020, the points of separate waste collection will be closed: all container sites are covered with snow. However, there are still many visitors to the protected areas, so the inspectors of the national park inform everyone about the need to take all the waste with them and dispose of it correctly at the nearest point of collection of municipal solid waste.
In March, the national park will hold an annual campaign “Clean Ice of Baikal”, during which visitors will receive incentive coupons for free services of the Park for sorted waste handed over at the exit from the protected areas: clean recyclables and others.
