From November 28 to 30, the III Congress of Young Scientists was held in the Sirius Park of Science and Art in Sochi. Lake Baikal Foundation was invited to the event to present its ideas – “Water Week” and the Youth Water Council.
Water Week is an annual event that brings together representatives of government, business, scientists, NGOs and protected areas, young scientists and specialists, as well as students to discuss topical issues of water resources management and proposals to address modern challenges.
The Youth Water Council is an association of young people under 35 years old who are passionate about water issues and problems, implement water projects, prepare analytical documents, including the Youth Water Strategy of Russia, and represent Russian youth at international thematic events.
“Water is a strategic resource of the 21st century. It is essential for all sectors of the economy, as well as for human survival. At the same time, the amount of clean fresh water is rapidly decreasing. Consequently, the price of water is increasing.Russia ranks 2nd in the world in terms of fresh water reserves, second only to Brazil. All this suggests that our country has every chance to become a leader on the world stage in this area. However, the water sector in Russia is experiencing a staff shortage. Therefore, in 2024, the Lake Baikal Foundation launches the projects “Water Week” and Youth Water Council to popularize work in the water sector among young people”, – Olga Amelkina, Deputy Director General of the Lake Baikal Foundation.
The Congress of Young Scientists is a key event of the Decade of Science and Technology, announced by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation in order to strengthen the role of science and technology in solving the most important problems of society and country development. The Congress is the largest platform for dialog between advanced and fundamental science, government authorities and the real sector of the economy and sets the main vectors of scientific and technological development of Russia.
This year more than 5,000 young scientists from 85 regions of Russia and 36 countries took part in the Congress. Congress 2023 is 150 events of the business program and 730 speakers.
