The 30th inter-institute scientific seminar dedicated to Ludmila Alexandrovna Izhboldina was held in the Baikal Museum of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Lyudmila Alexandrovna is a well-known scientist-botanist, algologist, hydrobiologist, ecologist and Baikalologist. She devoted her whole life to the study of algae-macrophytes of Lake Baikal. The seminar presented the report of Elena Vyacheslavovna Mincheva, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Baikal Museum of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, on the results of the study of endemic algae of Lake Baikal, conducted with the support of the Lake Baikal Foundation.
The scientific session was opened by the report of the chief researcher Olga Timofeevna Rusinek about the life and achievements of Lyudmila Alexandrovna Izhboldina, her full biography was presented for the first time. Lyubov Kravtsova, Senior Researcher of the Limnological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told about the key directions and results of the scientist’s research.
Director of the Baikal Museum of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Borisovich Kupchinsky presented reports on the methodology of underwater works and on the study of endemic macrophytes of Lake Baikal conducted by Elena Vyacheslavovna Mincheva with the support of the Foundation.
Ekaterina Sorokovikova, a researcher of the Limnological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, spoke about the latest results of her work on a comprehensive study of the taxonomic status, ecology and physiology of new species of cyanobacteria in Lake Baikal.
Irina Egorova, Senior Researcher of the Siberian Institute of Physiology and Biochemistry, and Evgenia Maksimova, Associate Professor of the Department of Natural Sciences of the Pedagogical Institute of ISU, told about unique algal communities in terrestrial ecosystems of the region. Terrestrial algae live in soil and on its surface, on stones and inside stony substrate, on woody and moss-like plants, animals, in snow or ice cover and other surfaces. The research is one of the largest and covers an area of 1 million square kilometers.
Christina Sergeevna Dubrova, 1st year master student of the Pedagogical Institute of ISU, together with her teacher Svetlana Semenovna Vorobyeva, Senior Researcher of the Limnological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, presented a report on the seasonal dynamics of the composition and structure of phytoplankton of the coastal part of Lake Baikal.
The event ended with the exhibition devoted to the life and scientific activity of Lyudmila Alexandrovna Izhboldina, and also the participants of the seminar got acquainted with the amazing world of endemic macrophytes in the aquarium exposition and aquarium laboratory of the Museum.
