The initiative to hold the Baikal International Ecological Water Forum can be considered as another important step in solving practical problems aimed at preserving the water wealth of Lake Baikal.
The organizers of the event are the Governor of the Irkutsk Region S.G. Levchenko, Irkutsk Region Government, Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Irkutsk Region with the participation of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Lake Baikal Foundation is a partner of the Forum.
The main goal of the Forum is the selection of wastewater treatment technology for use on the cleanest lake of the planet. Participants of the discussions will discuss the following topics:
- State policy of preserving the unique ecosystem of Lake Baikal;
- Innovative technologies of water purification and waste utilization. International experience and legislative practices in the protection of water resources;
- The development of ecological tourism in the Baikal natural area, taking into account environmental constraints, as well as other topical issues.
Special attention will be paid to the involvement of young people in the protection of the environment and the formation of a conscious attitude to nature. The organizers developed a special program «Ecological worldview. ECO-Generation» (Ecology, Culture, Education). Participants will get acquainted with the best educational practices of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
One of the important events of the Forum is the signing of a memorandum on the establishment of the Association of Lake Regions with a view to partnership and the practical exchange of knowledge and experience.
At the exhibition «World Cleanliness Standard – Lake Baikal», domestic and foreign companies will present their stands, actively introducing the latest technologies related to water purification into production activities.
Within the framework of the event the results of the contest «The World Standard of Wastewater Treatment – Baikal Water» will be summed up, which will allow its participants to demonstrate the best design solutions, technologies, equipment for wastewater treatment.
During the Forum, participants will be greeted by astronauts from the International Space Station.
The opening ceremony and the work of the Baikal International Ecological Water Forum will include the participation of Sergei Ivanov, the Russian Federation President’s special representative for Environmental Protection, Ecology and Transport, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Russian Federation, representatives of the Federation Council and the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
As the United Nations representative Jan Dusik, director of the European Regional Office of the UN Environment Program, will participate in the Forum.
Among the Forum participants are also representatives of the government, business community, public organizations, including international level, prominent scientists, environmentalists, experts. Representatives from 14 countries – Mongolia, Germany, Poland, Korea, France, India, Great Britain, Canada, Turkey, Kenya, Switzerland, Finland, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia confirmed their participation in the event.
The Moscow government at the Forum will be represented by the delegation of the Department of Housing and Communal Services. In total, more than 400 people will take part in the event.
