Since 2023, the Lake Baikal Foundation has been an observer organization at the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP UNFCCC). This year, we confirmed our status by obtaining 4 quotas for the Foundation’s delegation.
The UN Climate Change Conference, or COP, is the supreme body for discussing and implementing the provisions of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement, which are key international climate agreements. Today, COP is one of the largest UN events, gathering tens of thousands of participants, including heads of state, ministers, representatives of business, and civil society.18:49
Observer organisations are tasked with ensuring transparency in the negotiation process, providing expert advice, and raising awareness and highlighting climate change issues.
In 2023, we managed to produce two analytical reports with more than 30,000 views, digest daily highlights of the conference, participate in two COP28 events as speakers, and follow up the conference with a report and lectures at two universities.
About plans for COP29
This year we plan to continue to cover the negotiation process and produce analysis as an observer organisation, and in addition:
- we will pay great attention to the participation of young people in the climate negotiations – the Fund’s delegation will include a representative of the Youth Water Council, and a climate working group will be established under the Council, which will prepare the Council’s position at COP29;
- we will organise an online webinar in the run-up to the conference to inform a wider audience about the climate negotiations;
- at the summit we will work as part of the organising committee of the Youth and Children’s Pavilion;
- following the conference, we will organise a thematic event in Moscow for young people interested in the climate agenda;
- we will issue an analytical report covering each track of the negotiations in detail, we will be speakers at the conference, and much more!
