The master class on «Waste management in specially protected natural areas» will be held on July 31, 2019 within the framework of the pilot environmental project «Trash Free National Parks», which is organized by the Lake Baikal Foundation at the territory of the Republic of Buryatia, namely in Zabaikalsky national park, with the support of the Presidential Grants Foundation.
Experts of the event will be employees of the national park, representatives of the regoperator, who will talk about the real situation with waste in Zabaikalsky national park, and international experts will share their knowledge on waste management, based on their experience and implemented projects in other protected areas in Russia and in the world. In particular, Elena Vokina, head of the Department of tourism and recreation development of the Federal state budgetary institution «Reserved podlemorie», will talk about the organization of collection and export of solid communal waste in Zabaikalsky national park; Igor Alekseev, General Director of «Ekoalyans», will highlight the problems and prospects of waste management in the coastal zone of lake Baikal in the Republic of Buryatia. Olga Ulanova, project Manager for development and research, DHZ AG (Oberglatt, Switzerland) will present the experience of some EU countries on waste management in protected areas, Elena Komarova, international expert on waste management, will talk about the Austrian experience on solid municipal waste management in national parks. During the master class, an interactive hour, a questionnaire and a discussion on the topics of the reports will be held.
The administration of Ust-Barguzin village, employees of Zabaikalsky national park, representatives of the regional operator for the treatment of TKO in Ulan-Ude, tourist bases and hotels working in protected areas, volunteers of the project «National parks without garbage», as well as everyone who wants to learn more about the opportunities and barriers to improve the waste management system in protected areas in the Baikal region are invited to participate in the master class.

The pilot project «Trash Free National Parks» was launched in Zabaikalsky national park, Republic of Buryatia, in early 2019. The transition to the standard of sustainable waste management in the park began with the introduction of the «Bring – take with you» principle, infrastructure for separate waste collection and an educational program for tourists visiting protected areas. Thanks to the support of the Presidential Grants Foundation, it became possible to expand this project, including a master class, a study of the morphology, dynamics and logistics of waste generation in Zabaikalsky national park, according to which it will be possible to optimize the system of solid waste management within the framework of the concept of sustainable development.
