Our Achievements

2023

  • Joined the international expert team of the 7th Global Review of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
  • We continued our partnership with the World Around You Foundation of Siberian Wellness and started cooperation with Barrier, a water filter company.
  • We launched the project «The Baikal: Protecting and Preserving». In 2023, it was supported by the Presidential Grants Fund in the amount of 2,835,856 rubles.
  • We launched a special project with Pyaterochka store: posters with tips on careful outdoor recreation appeared in stores in three regions.
  • Together with experts we prevented artificial regulation of the Baikal seal population and obtained new data on the number and condition of the endemic.
  • We went on a large expedition to prepare a development strategy for the «Zapovednoe Podlemorye» and launched the «Trail of Trials» project.
  • Conducted two courses for third-year students of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration under the program «Management of Global Challenges».
  • Launched a project to restore Baikal forests affected by fires.
  • Became a member of the coordinating council of the World Water Forum.
  • Became an observer organization at the COP28 climate summit.
  • The Foundation’s 2021 Annual Report received the Gold Standard in the Donors’ Forum competition.

2022

  • We retained all of the Foundation’s projects and launched a new grant program. We helped to complete the study of the genetic code of the Baikal seal, organized several scientific expeditions on the traces of endemic animals and plants, trained thousands of people in the rules of responsible tourism in national parks, and involved high technology in the 76-year scientific monitoring of the lake.
  • Created a course on water resources for the university. The Foundation’s team developed and delivered a course on «Water Resources Management and Leadership» in English for undergraduate students of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration. We managed to attract leading Russian and foreign experts: scientists, managers, professionals in the field of water resources management as course instructors.
  • We participated in the scientific editing of the book «Look: Baikal». The travel book was published by Samokat publishing house at the end of 2022. We decided to share our knowledge about the lake and tell young and adult readers about how anyone, no matter where they live, can help Baikal. Samokat Publishing House is now a partner of the Foundation. 10% of the proceeds from the sale of the book «Look: Baikal» will be transferred to the development of our projects.
  • We continued to speak publicly on the topic of climate change adaptation. We presented the Foundation’s position on the development of technologies in the conservation of intact forests of Baikal at the meeting of the Expert Council on Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation on the eve of the 27th UN Climate Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh (COP-27). The Foundation became the only representative of non-profit sector.
  • We started a large charitable consulting project for a specially protected natural area on Lake Baikal. We started to create a development strategy for a huge and unique territory consisting of the Transbaikal National Park, Barguzin Nature Reserve and Frolikha Wildlife Refuge, which are managed by the Federal State Budgetary Institution «Zapovednoe Podlemorye».

  • Lake Baikal Foundation became the first member of the World Water Council from Russia
  • More than 100 thousand pupils watched the Foundation’s video about tourism
  • The project «Sustainable Management of MSW in Protected Areas: Regulatory Proposals» was included in the top 100 ideas according to the results of the expert selection of the forum of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives «Strong Ideas for a New Time»
  • «The Baikal Seal Year» project was included in the top 100 projects of the Presidential Grants Foundation contest

2018

  • «With a Backpack on the Trail» project became the winner of the competition «The National Environmental Prize named after V.I. Vernadsky» in 2018 in the nomination «Environmental education for sustainable development»
  • The Foundation won the Presidential Grants Foundation contest in category «Environment and animals protection» for the implementation and recieved funds to implement the «The Baikal Seal Year» project

2017

  • The Foundation won the Presidential Grants Foundation contest  in the field of «Environment and animals protection» for the implementation of the project «With a Backpack on the Trail»
